A SMARTPHONE APP THAT TRACKS BATTLEFIELD OBJECTS


Researchers have developed a new software that can track the exact location of distant objects and monitor their speed and direction, allowing smartphone armed soldiers to better target the location of their enemies.
The software developed by the University of Missouri researchers relies on smartphones' global positioning system (GPS) and imaging abilities.
It could be used by everyone, including golfers judging distance to the green and biologists documenting the location of a rare animal without disturbing it.
"The great advantage of a smartphone is that it provides so many tools in a single, readily available, relatively inexpensive package," said Qia Wang, doctoral student at the University of Missouri College of Engineering, who led the development of the software.
"For example, on the battlefield, a soldier needs a range-finder, compass, GPS and other tools to do reconnaissance before calling in an air strike. With our software, the soldier can have all those instruments in one device that can be purchased off the shelf," added Wang, according to a Missouri statement.
"When that soldier returns from war, he can use the same software to protect his family by clocking a speeder near her children's school and catching the culprit on video," Wang and his colleagues developed their software to locate and track: Targets of known size - when the size of the target is known, a single image is enough to pinpoint the target's location.
The software computes the latitude and longitude of the target using the smartphones' GPS location, compass reading and the distance to the target based on the relative size of the target in the image compared to its known real-life size.

"We believe the natural electrical field that's associated with the wounding process acts like a compass to tell cells where to migrate. You get a field that points towards the wound and directs cells there".

A LASER POWERED "NEEDLE" TO GIVE PAIN FREE INJECTIONS

        
South Korean scientists have developed a new system that blasts microscopic jets of drugs into the skin making an injection a painless affair. The system uses an erbium-doped YAG laser to propel a tiny, precise stream of medicine with just the right amount of force. 
The impacting jet pressure is higher than the skin tensile strength and thus causes the jet to smoothly penetrate into the targeted depth underneath the skin, without any splashback of the drug.
It penetrate up to several millimetres beneath the skin surface, with any damage to the tissue.

ISRO to launch Indo-French SARAL satellite on 12-12-12

              SARAL will provide data products to operational and research user communities, in support of marine meteorology and sea state forecasting; operational oceanography; seasonal forecasting; climate monitoring; ocean, earth system and climate research, the officials said.
